After a long winter, summer feels like it's finally here! With food tours, festivals, community events, and 27 blocks of quaint bakeries, eclectic food markets and retailers, we've got your summer bucket list covered. Here's 9 things to do on Alberta Avenue this summer!
1) Get Connected to Your Roots
Celebrating a diverse range of cultures, the Thousand Faces Festival, May 25 - 27 at the Alberta Avenue Community League, tells the mythic stories of our roots through theatre, dance and visual art. This year's festival features Usha Gupta, Theatre Prospero, KayBridge Productions and more.
2) Eat Your Way Along the Avenue
After a huge success last summer, Eats on 118 is back for the 2018 edition, June 13 and August 29.
A culinary tour de force, Wild Heart Collective, will be your hosts for the evening, and guide you along the Avenue to discover a variety of dishes from some of Alberta Avenue's best restaurants. Come feeling hungry, adventurous and ready to enjoy a summer evening on the Ave.
June 13 will feature Paraiso Tropical, Handy Bakery and Battista's Calzone Co. August 29th destinations will be announced shortly.
3) Celebrate new businesses on the Avenue
Join Simba's Den and Norwood Dental Centre for an evening to celebrate our new businesses and the revitalization of Alberta Avenue!
Simba's Den opened in mid-May 2018 and Norwood Dental Centre is under new ownership as of March 2018.
At this event, attendees will have the opportunity to sample Simba's delicious menu and learn about their local dental office. No long speeches; all good times! Awesome door prizes will be available for the lucky recipients.
Come out with your friends, family, colleagues, and neighbours for a wonderful evening celebrating the growth, diversity, and development of our community.
4) Take a Dance Class at Bedouin Beats
Get those hips moving this summer and take a class at Bedouin Beats. With a wide variety of classes, there's something for every level, whether you're honing your skills or discovering a new passion.
5) Enjoy Music With Your Best Friend
Muttstock on July 7, is an annual outdoor festival for music and dog lovers alike. The free event features performances, pet-friendly activities, vendors and demonstration. Attendees are encouraged to make a donation or bring a food donation, which will go to local rescue shelters.
6) Enjoy a Patio, or Two
We all know that as soon as the warm weather hits, the best place to be is on a patio! Alberta Avenue has a number for you to enjoy including at the Carrot Community Arts Coffeehouse, Sloppy Hoggs Roed Hus, Passion de France and more!
7) Get a Fresh Fade
Alberta Avenue is home to a number of barbershops. Let the old school experts take care of you and get a new summer style. Check out the full list on our directory here.
8) Chalk It Up!
Arts on the Ave presents: Chalk It Up on 118 and KDays Pancake Breakfast.
On July 21, start the day with your family and friends at a free KDays Pancake breakfast. Plus, participate and watch the magic of Chalk Arts take to the sidewalks, alleys and streets! May we also suggest a stroll down the Avenue? With coffee and pastry from one of the delicious bakeries in hand, of course!
9) Curl up with a good book
Getting cozy with a good book isn't just for cold weather. A new book from Wee Book Inn + sunshine = summer perfection. Maybe try it on one of those patios we mentioned earlier ;).
