Norwood Dental, located at 11660 95 Street, had some work done this spring. With a new look and new equipment, they had a grand re-opening to celebrate. We sat down with Office Manager Amanda Nielsen to get the inside scoop.
Q: Give us a bit of background about Norwood Dental.
AN: Norwood Dental Centre is located just off of Alberta Avenue (118th Avenue). We strive to offer caring, quality, and affordable dental care. Our office believes every patient is important and should be treated with care, comfort, and kindness.
We are *not* your typical dental office. Our dental office is a place of laughter, fun, and community. We take dentistry and oral health seriously, but not ourselves. ;)
We like to get to know our patients on a personal level and strive for complete patient comfort. Our doctor doesn't wear a white coat, and our team doesn't judge or pressure. Every smile is welcome at Norwood Dental Centre!
Q: You've been renovating Norwood Dental since earlier this spring, tell us about some of the upgrades you've made.
AN: It's been a busy few months! We've transformed our practice in an effort to deliver the best patient experience that we can.
- New dental chairs that massage patients during treatments
- New digital x-rays that give our doctor a clearer picture of the patient's mouth with lower radiation output
- New decor - our walls now feature the work of amazing local artists and our waiting room has comfy new couches
- We now have televisions in all of our dental rooms so patients can watch their favourite show while at their appointment
- And, we now have a HUGE toy treasure chest for children to pick a toy from after their appointment!
We've also added new services, such as whitening and nitrous oxide (which can help put anxious patients at ease during treatments).
Lastly, we've added other elements to our practice to help make the experience more relaxing. We offer patients blankets for warmth, weighed gravity blankets to help manage anxiety, aromatherapy, and warm lemon-scented toilettes to help patients refresh after their treatment. Our bathroom is fully stocked with floss, lip balm, lotions, and more so that patients can feel completely at home. We have coffee, tea, and hot chocolate available for patients while they are waiting for their appointment. Our waiting room has free patient WiFi and a mobile device charging station.
We know going to the dentist isn't everyone's favourite thing to do, but we are working our absolute best to create an awesome patient experience.
Q: Why did you choose to make Alberta Avenue the place where you started your business?
AN: We love Alberta Avenue! This community is diverse, resilient, and optimistic. Despite Alberta Avenue being in the heart of the city, it "feels" like a small town - and we love that. People here care about one another and take the time to say hello.
Our patients come from every walk of life and we love meeting them and hearing their stories. We've met people who have lived here for 40+ years, young families who have moved to the neighbourhood in search of affordable homes and shorter commutes, and newcomers who have just arrived in Edmonton. Alberta Avenue is an inclusive place that feels like home. We are really looking forward to growing with the community over the years.
Q: What has been the community's response?
AN: We've had a really warm welcome from the community. People have stopped by to say hello, tour the clinic, and introduce themselves - that's been really welcoming! Thank you, Alberta Ave community!
Our philosophy is to be involved with, and give back to, the community we work in. Thus far, we've been pleased to sponsor the Alberta Ave Community League by donating food and drinks for its AGM, volunteer and donate for the Alberta Ave Spark! Youth Camp, volunteer and donate for CapitalCare Norwood, sponsor an award for a dancer at Bedouin Beats, and sponsor an artist at the Nina Haggerty Centre for the Arts. We love community collaboration and engaging with our neighbours.
Q: What has been the most exciting part leading up to the grand re-opening of Norwood Dental?
AN: That's a tough question! I think the most exciting part has probably been re-imagining what a dental office can be. It doesn't have to be a place of fear, judgement, or pressure.
A dental office can be a place of community, laughter, and family. It can be a place patients look forward to visiting and staff look forward to working at. And it can be place that contributes to its community for the better. We've had a lot of fun taking the time to explore our vision of how to do dentistry differently at our practice. We hope our patients will feel the difference when they walk through our doors and have their appointments.
