Heading into the Spring (fingers crossed!), means we’re heading into wedding season! At ABC Weddings, planning for your big day truly is a family affair. Bruce and his mother (pictured above) along with Bruce’s brother, Dwayne are at the helm of the party planning store.
Q: ABC Weddings has been around since 1961, how did the business start?
Bruce: Emily Dempsey started the business in 1961 as a hobby store. It was located across the street from Simpsons-Sears, so it was a real shopping destination. Over the years, Sears relocated to Kingsway Mall and so the store became a wedding supply store and got into the party rental business.
Q: Tell us about the type of products and services you supply.
Bruce: We are a full service party supply store, predominately dealing with weddings. We have everything from linens, to staging, audio equipment, tents, chairs, BBQs and so on. We can also help plan the decor for a wedding or party.
Q: Why did you start your business and have kept your business on Alberta Avenue?
Bruce: Emily originally leased the building across from Sears because it was a retail destination. After the business expanded, we eventually purchased both buildings ABC Wedding occupies today. There have been great changes to Alberta Avenue over the years. One of the most positive changes was the Street Scaping that the City did a few years ago. It seemed to make the Avenue more vibrant. I also like the diversity of stores and restaurants on the Avenue.
